Hi, I’m Daniel Friedman. I’m the author of four novels. My first, DON’T EVER GET OLD was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best First Novel, the Thriller Award, the Anthony Award and won the Macavity Award. It got starred reviews in Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews. I am very proud of it and I think you should read it. It’s about an elderly retired police detective who discovers that the Nazi officer who tortured him in a World War 2 prison camp may still be alive.
My most recent novel, RUNNING OUT OF ROAD is also very good. It got stars from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus, which described it as “screamingly funny and achingly sad.” It’s a sequel to DON’T EVER GET OLD, but it’s written intentionally so that you can pick it up without reading the first two books in the series. In this one, the elderly detective faces a reckoning over his handling of a decades old murder case that has become the subject of a true-crime podcast.
I’m also a lot of other things. I am a former lawyer, and I wrote freelance about video games for Vox Media’s Polygon vertical for several years, and have contributed essays on political subjects to Quillette. Recently, I wrote a feature about crypto for Reason.
I’d like to get work on various topics in one place and see if anyone is interested in it when I publish it under my own newsletter, so I am going to start posting and see how it goes. I do think there’s an audience for gaming and culture writing that doesn’t come from an explicitly progressive political perspective, so I am going to start with that, and I may write more about politics, or I may offer serialized fiction to subscribers if there’s interest in it. Thanks for reading.
Be honest with yourself dude you’re not cut out for this
